Matt Grevers x Missy Franklin Grabs Gold
Third day of the Olympics was great day in swimming for the USA. This time in the Mens and Womens as Team USA's Matt Grevers and Missy Franklin takes home the gold in the 100m backstroke competition. Missy Franklin at 17 years old grabs her first medal in a upset over heavily favored Australia's Emily Seebohm. Franklin drew alongside Seebohn, and then showed an edge with 10 meters to go. She drove even harder, and arched toward the finish. “Brought it home and just tried to get my hand on the wall,” Franklin said. When she looked up, she saw her name atop the board, with a time of 58.33 to Seebohm’s 58.68, and a giant videoscreen flashing a shot of her parents celebrating. All at once, the nice kid took over again. “I saw that No.1,” she gushed. “You dream of it so often that you still feel like you’re dreaming.” Ironically Franklin attends high school in Aurora,Colorado the city of the tragic movie theater shooting which she brung a special light of happiness to a city that needs more then any place in the U.S today. Meanwhile moments later another gold was in the grasp for another swimmer in the mens 100m backstroke by Matt Grevers. Grevers set an Olympic record today pulling off a stunning rally on his return lap, winning the 100 back in 52.16. The 6-foot-8 Grevers finished 0.38 seconds ahead of the previous mark set by fellow American Aaron Peirsol at the 2008 Beijing Games. Also his along side of Grevers was his teammate Nick Thoman. Matt said he and Nick knew they "weren't jinxing anything," and they were right, though Grevers didn't notice right away that Americans took the top two spots. "I must be selfish because it took me a good 10 seconds to realize he got second," he quipped. "That's something I should do right away. But when I noticed, that moment became much more special. To know that we can go 1-2 in that event, again really shows the USA's dominance in backstroke right now when we're able to step up." Its no doubt it has been a special day for Team USA in the swimming events and today Matt Grevers,Nick Thoman,and Missy Franklin definitely delivered.
